Do you remember when taking a shower was just a small, unremarkable part of your day? Go in, soap, shampoo, condition and depending on the day, maybe shave the parts that needed shaving.  Well those days are gone, according to a few trends that have taken over TikTok. Millions of people have started posting their shower routines and it has become a thing.  From the 12-step “everything shower” to the zen “nothing shower”, we’ve got all the deets on social media’s cleansing obsession.

The Inside Scoop on the “Everything Shower”

With over 160 million views on Tik Tok, if you have not heard of an “everything shower”, you’re missing out! In  the most obvious terms, an “everything shower’ is exactly what it sounds like – a shower where you do everything. This is not a five minute, in and out situation. This epic shower has three parts, can last for hours and include anywhere from 5 to 12 steps.

The Pre-Game
Of course this trendy shower has an epic pre-game. Before the waterworks begin, there are a couple of pre-shower steps we’ve been seeing people do. Setting the mood is a big one whether it be by lighting a candle or plugging in a scent diffuser.  Next comes the pre-cleansing of the hair and face. Indulging in a pre-shampoo treatment can be very beneficial especially if your strands are super parched and damaged. We like the Moringa + Jojoba Treatment Oil by Verb ($20). It’s reasonably priced and 100% natural.  While your hair is marinating, move on to the face. Using a pre-cleanser like Dermalogica’s PreCleanse ($49) is actually a great idea, especially if you wear a lot of makeup and sunscreen and really want to get your skin squeaky clean. It is gentle and doesn’t strip the skin so it is a healthy first step. Since this shower is all about self-care, adding some therapeutic body treatments like dry brushing have also become popular.  Dry brushing has many benefits for the body and mind.  It exfoliates the skin, helps to increase circulation and also has mood boosting effects. It also is a very sensory experience and has calming effects.

Shower Hour
It’s game time! So what happens now? EVERYTHING. Shampooing and conditioning are the obvious first steps. But instead of using a quick rinse conditioner, many a Tik Toker opt for putting on a hair mask. There are so many great hair masks on the market, but we especially love the Intense Hydrating Masque by Morrocanoil ($42). It’s great for adding moisture, shine and helping with manageability. Leave it on for as long as you like, especially in this situation, when your shower is far from over.  Now it’s time for exfoliation. Exfoliation is so important in getting rid of dead skin cells and keeping your skin soft, shiny and smooth. In an “everything shower’, the exfoliation process includes the face, lips and body. Since the face and lips have more delicate skin, it is beneficial to use exfoliators targeted to these more sensitive areas. We love both the Daily Superfoliant Exfoliator by Dermalogica ($65) and  Sugar Doctor Lip Renewal Mask by JOAH ($9.99).  For the body, try Tree Hut Moroccan Rose Shea Sugar Scrub ($10.49). It smells great, looks pretty in the shower and leaves the skin soft.  After exfoliating, it’s time to get your shave on! For the smoothest shave, make sure to use a moisturizing shave gel and a nice clean razor. Now it’s time to rinse off the hair mask, wash your body and face and you are good to go! Water off, part 2 of the “everything shower” is complete.

Wait, There’s More…

Turning off the shower does not mean it is over (it’s called an “everything shower” for a reason!)  The post-shower agenda is just as important. After drying off, it’s all about  moisturizing head-to-toe, doing a skincare regime and focusing on your hair. If you’re showering in the AM, make sure to add sunscreen in your routine and if you’re doing it at night, try a retinol-based nightcream for anti-aging benefits. As for your tresses, spray on a leave-in conditioner, we love It’s a 10 Hair Care Miracle Leave-in Conditioner Product ($18.99) and style your hair or just go to bed. This shower routine is exhausting!

The “Nothing” Shower
The antithesis to the “everything shower”, this minimalist shower became a thing thanks to Tik Tok user @alexandra.r.simpson. This shower requires nothing but water, and there is no cleansing, exfoliating or masking involved as it is more of an emotional ritual. There are no rules, simply stand under the shower and zone out, though screaming and crying and other emotional releases have been trending. This is more of a soul cleansing ritual and in our crazy lives, it is much needed. Sometimes the nothing is absolutely everything.
